Mastering Pick and Roll Defense: Essential Strategies for Basketball Coaches

EN: In the fast-paced world of basketball, mastering pick and roll defense is essential for any coach aiming to build a formidable team. The pick and roll (P&R) is a fundamental offensive play that can be devastating if not defended properly. In this article, we’ll delve into three key defensive strategies for handling the pick and roll: ICE/BLUE, PUSH & UNDER, and HEDGE/STEP OUT. Additionally, we’ll explore how to effectively teach these techniques to your players in English.

ICE/BLUE Defense:

Imagine yourself on the court during a training session, with a big player (A) and a small player (B) ready to defend. When the P&R occurs on the side, instruct player A to communicate by calling out «ICE» to the defender of the ball handler. Player B should immediately react to the call, changing their stance to force the ball handler towards the baseline while denying the middle.

Big guy is A and Small guy is B

A : when your man goes to set a P&R, you have to call “ICE” to communicate with the defender of the ball handler.

B : When you hear “ICE” you change your feet and try to send the ball handler towards the baseline, and we deny the middle.

PUSH & UNDER Defense:

When facing a screener who can quickly pop out to shoot or roll after the screen, or when the ball handler isn’t a significant shooting threat, the PUSH & UNDER defense comes into play. This strategy involves the on-ball defender quickly going under both the screen and their own teammate. Encourage your players to recognize situations where this approach is advantageous and execute it decisively.

Big guy is A and Small guy is B

A : When your man goes to set a P&R, you have to be very close to him, 2-3 steps before he tries to set the pick so A can change his feet and create separation with the driver and go under the screen.

B : You have to give a lot of ball pressure, keep the ball as far as you can for the basket. When you hear B call “PUSH” you have to be able to take 1-2 steps back off the ball, create separation and not be hit by the screener to get in front of the ball again quickly.

HEDGE/STEP OUT Defense:

When the P&R is about to happen, how do we explain this type of defense?

The HEDGE/STEP OUT defense is the most commonly used tactic against good offensive players. When the P&R is imminent, instruct player A to slide out 1-2 steps and «hedge» or «show» to impede the ball handler’s progress and force them to change direction towards the basket. Player B should be ready to avoid the screen and swiftly get in front of the ball after the hedge is executed.

Big guy is A and Small guy is B

A : When the screener goes to set the P&R, if it is an effective screen, you must slide out 1-2 steps and “hedge” / “show” to get in front of the ball handler and make him change his direction towards the basket.

B : Make sure you are able to avoid the screen (make sure he doesn’t run into you), and get in front of the ball as soon as the big guy goes back to his man after the HEDGE.

Teaching These Strategies:

EN: To effectively teach these defensive strategies in English, employ clear and concise communication:

  1. Visual Demonstrations: Utilize on-court demonstrations to illustrate positioning, movements, and player responsibilities.
  2. Verbal Instructions: Clearly explain each defensive concept using simple language, emphasizing key terms like «ICE,» «PUSH & UNDER,» and «HEDGE/STEP OUT.»
  3. Repetition and Drills: Incorporate drills that simulate P&R situations, allowing players to practice these defensive techniques repeatedly until they become second nature.
  4. Feedback and Correction: Provide constructive feedback to players during drills and scrimmages, correcting any mistakes and reinforcing proper execution.

By implementing these teaching methods and emphasizing the importance of communication and teamwork, coaches can empower their players to excel in defending against the pick and roll, ultimately leading to success on the basketball court.
